Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has so far unveiled a number of three devices powered by Google's Android operating system, including the Xperia X10 and the Xperia X10 mini and mini pro. All three devices are set to land on the market with the Android 1.6 platform on board, yet it seems that the company plans on upgrading them to upcoming OS flavors too, such as Android 2.2.

The leading handset vendor already announced plans to upgrade the Xperia X10 device to newer flavors of the Android platform in the following few months, and it seems that the other two devices will also taste the updates. While Android 2.1 is likely to arrive for these handsets in the first half of the ongoing year, the upcoming Android 2.2 is expected to become available for them in the second half of the year, a recent post on the crave blog notes.

A Sony Ericsson spokesperson confirmed that the phones would be upgraded to a newer flavor of Android, which most of us thought might be Android 2.1. According to the spokesperson, the update “will be an Eclair variant, so it could be 2.1 or even 2.2.” Those who already considered the purchase of an Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini or Xperia X10 mini pro will certainly rejoice learning that the handsets they like will taste future Android OSes too.

As for what the Android 2.2 is all about, nothing is certain at the moment, it seems. We already heard about this operating system version before, when an HTC device dubbed Scorpion leaked into the wild, but that was mainly considered a rumor. However, since a handset vendor mentions the OS now, it seems that the update will land on the market during the following several months, with the second half of the year being the most possible release time frame. Keep an eye on this space for additional details on the matter, as soon as they become available.
