Wireless services provider O2 UK is gearing up for the release of a new Android-based device from Sony Ericsson, namely the affordable Xperia ray that went official only a few months ago.

The new device should make an appearance on shelves at the wireless carrier as soon as September, and was already put on a coming soon page on O2's website.

O2 is the second mobile phone carrier in the UK to add the Xperia ray to its coming soon page, after Three UK made a similar move not too long ago.

Although set to hit shelves as an affordable device, the smartphone still comes with a series of features that bring it close to some of the company's high-end devices.

“Xperia ray is the new sleek and beautiful smartphone from Sony Ericsson with a stylish aluminium frame,” the wireless services provider notes on its website.

“With a 3.3" touchscreen, it's super slim at just 9.4mm. Xperia ray has a 1Ghz processor, and comes with Sony's Reality display with Mobile Bravia engine.”

The new mobile phone also comes with Wi-Fi, HSDPA, and Bluetooth connectivity options, as well as with a DLNA capabilities, and built-in GPS receiver.

It also sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, along with a front-facing camera to enable video calling.

“It's got the latest Android 2.3 operating system, and is fully integrated for social networking with 'Facebook inside Xperia',” O2 UK explains.

“It has an 8.1 Megapixel camera with Exmor R technology for crisp and clear photos in low light conditions, and HD video functionality. Xperia ray also comes with a front facing camera and a scratch resistant screen.”

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray also lands at the wireless carrier with a4GB microSD memory card inside, and with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space. It can be seen at O2 here. No info on its pricing emerged so far.
