In February this year, Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson unveiled to the world a nice range of new handsets running under Google's Android operating system, and the Xperia neo, a device expected to hit shelves in early July, was among them.

The new device was supposed to arrive on the market in March, the same as the company's Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY handsets did, but got delayed due to the earthquake that hit Japan in early March.

Sony Ericsson did announce that the mobile phone was delayed, but did not offer specific info on when it might hit the market until now.

However, a recent tweet from Sony Ericsson Italy (via Xperia Blog) notes that the mobile phone might be launched in the first week of July.

This means that the mobile phone might hit other markets around the world as well in the next two weeks or so, although nothing was confirmed on this for the time being.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia neo should arrive on the market in an affordable design, though packing a great deal of high-end features, just as the other Xperia handsets do.

The mobile phone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and sports a large 3.7-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a 854 x 480 pixels resolution.

It comes with the Bravia engine featured in other Xperia handsets from the company as well, and with a fast 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon application processor inside.

The Android-based mobile phone also comes with an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for HD video recording, as well as with a two-megapixel camera on the front for video calling.

Although no official announcement came from Sony Ericsson on the availability of Xperia neo, the tweet from their Italian branch can be taken as a confirmation of the near availability of this device, but keep an eye on this space for more on the matter.
