Although Sony Ericsson’s Xperia family did not have the success the Japanese-Swedish joint-venture was expecting, at least it gets awards for design.

The company has just announced that four of its products have received 2012 iF product design awards in the telecommunications category. Sony Ericsson Xperia active, Xperia ray, Xperia mini pro and Mix Walkman have been recognized for their innovative design.

It appears that Xperia active alone received the gold award for the quality of design and finish, choice of materials, environmental impact and functionality.

For those who are unfamiliar with the phone’s specs sheet, Sony Ericsson Xperia active sports a scratch-resistant LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen display based on Sony’s Bravia engine.

What makes this phone unique is the fact that it can be used even when fingers are wet or while the handset is exposed to bright sunshine.

Xperia ray, Mix Walkman and Xperia mini pro also received product design awards given their dynamic shapes and beautiful designs.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is only 9.4mm thin and offers users a comfortable feeling when held. The sides of the phone are made of aluminum, which gives Xperia ray a premium look.

Xperia mini pro is a small smartphone that comes with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, allowing for fast and accurate typing. Just like the Xperia active, this one boasts a scratch resistant LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen display based on Sony’s Bravia engine.

The Xperia active smartphone reflects our commitment to offer handsets for active consumers with stunning design inside and out. Design has always been a cornerstone of how we approach innovation and we will continue to build on this success with the new iconic design language introduced as part of our 2012 portfolio,” said Jeanna Kimbré, director of Creative Product Design for Sony Ericsson.
