Sony Ericsson Xperia active was tipped for India in August, but the smartphone was available for pre-order since last week.

Although Flipkart stated that the rugged handset will be available in the fourth week of October, the phone is now available for purchase.

Customers who wish to get Sony Ericsson's only Xperia rugged phone must pay Rs 19,990 (about $405 or 295 EUR) upfront.

It is also worth mentioning that Flipkart also throws in a fee Bluetooth headset for all customers who purchase the Xperia active.

Sony Ericsson Xperia active is a mid-range rugged Android smartphone, which seems to be a better alternative to Motorola's DEFY or DEFY+.

The handset is powered by Google'a Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system with Sony Ericsson's proprietary Timescape user interface.

Xperia active packs 1GB of internal memory (320 MB user available), 512 MB of RAM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

According to the manufacturer, the phone comes with a free 2GB memory card in the sales package, but Flipkart mentions that the Xperia active features a 4G memory card pre-installed.

Softpedia team had the chance to see the rugged smartphone in action at this year's IFA, in Berlin, and we were impressed by its waterproof capabilities.

Xperia active is IP67 certified, which confirms the phone is dust and water resistant.

Its 3.0-inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors support and 320 x 480 pixels resolution is based on Sony's Bravia Mobile engine.

The device sports a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, face detection, image stabilization, as well as 720p HD video recording capabilities.

It is equipped with a 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor and packs a 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery that should provide up to 350 hours of standby (335 hours for 3G) or 5 hours of talk time.
