Hot on the heels of unveiling the Xperia mini and Xperia mini pro, Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson announced the upcoming availability of a new handset on the market in Japan, the Sony Ericsson Xperia acro.

The handset was spotted into the wild before, the same as were the new phones in the mini series, when it was rumored to be set to land in Japan as the special Xperia arc version the company designed for this country.

Indeed, the new device sports about the same hardware specs as the arc, along with new features tailored specifically for the needs of mobile phone users in Japan.

The new Xperia acro arrives on shelves with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon application processor inside, while running under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

Moreover, it arrives with a large 4.2-inch touchscreen display, with best-in-class imaging and display technology features from Sony, so as to offer a great experience when combined with the mobile TV functionality it was packed with.

The Xperia acro sports a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, along with an 8.1-megapixel photo snapper with ‘Exmor R™ for mobile’, which supports high quality images and HD video (720p) recording.

The specifications list of the new device also includes built in HDMI-connector, alon g with Infrared port for data sharing, Mobile wallet to pay for various products, the Adreno 205 GPU for great video playback and gaming capabilities, and more.

“We are delighted to be introducing this flagship model to Japan,” Bert Nordberg, President, Sony Ericsson, commented.

“In this sophisticated market, we are listening to consumers and are happy to adapt our products to fit in with requirements which they believe to be an essential part of the mobile experience.

“We expect that they will be pleased to have such a uniquely adept premium smartphone and look forward to a new wave of consumers experiencing the world of Xperia.”

The new Sony Ericsson Xperia acro is expected to become available for purchase in Japan sometime during summer, in two color flavors, namely Black and White.

Unfortunately, photos with the device were not available at the time of this article, but we'll add them here as soon as Sony Ericsson releases them.
