Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro to taste Android 2.1 soon

Sony Ericsson's Xperia lineup has just got expanded with a new Android-based device, the Xperia X8. The new device joins hands with the company's Android-based Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro, while proving a great entertainment smartphone meant to expand the reach of Sony Ericsson's popular lineup to more market segments.

The new device should land on the market with a user interface similar to the one present on Xperia X10 mini, with the four-corners approach for fast access to popular phone features. Moreover, it comes with the Timescape application for easy access to social networking sites, as well as with support for a wide range of other software solutions via the Android Market.

Timo Maassmann, product marketing manager for Xperia X8, said, “We are delighted to be able to bring the full experience of our XperiaTM smartphones to new consumers by delivering a fully featured device at a more accessible price position.” With the new phone, set to become available for purchase during the third quarter of the ongoing year, users will find it easy to play games, access YouTube videos or browse the Internet.

The specifications list of the new Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 includes a 3-inch touchscreen display, a 3.2-megapixel photo snapper with video recording capabilities, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth stereo (A2DP), FM radio, A-GPS, USB mass storage, Wi-Fi, a 1200mAh battery, and 128 MB of internal memory, coupled with a microSD card slot with support for cards of up to 16GB. Running under Google's Android 1.6 platform (Donut), the phone measures 99 x 54 x 15 mm and weighs in at 104g.

In addition to announcing the new device, Sony Ericsson revealed that the already available Android-based Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro were set for a software update in the third quarter of the year. According to the company, all three will receive a bump to Android 2.1 in the time frame, while Xperia X10 is set for another update in the fourth quarter, which should bring wirelessly connectivity with television for viewing content on a larger screen.
