Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson is finally gearing up to make the Windows Mobile-based Xperia X2 available for purchase in a wide range of markets all around the world, and has also unveiled a few more details on the future of the device recently. According to the company, the Xperia X2 is set to receive a series of software updates in the near future, with the last one landing sometime in May, and which will bring the just made official Windows Mobile 6.5.3 on board of it.

However, before the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 software solution will arrive on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, the handset is set to receive another firmware update, which will offer its users the possibility to taste Windows Mobile 6.5.2. This update is set to arrive in March, its seems, and should also bring along a series of improvements and fixes for issues the phone currently has, according to a recent post on xperiancers, the Xperia blog.

“In March, we’ll launch our first upgrade (MR1). It will upgrade Windows Mobile from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 (which will improve both the stability and usability of the device), it will bring in the use of video telephony, an FM radio and it will introduce fast GPS to get a quicker fix. As well as all this, MR1 will upgrade a lot of the applications in the phone to improve speed, usability and fix any bugs we find. The second update will go live in May and this will be a big one as it moves Windows mobile onto 6.5.3. This is a significant upgrade in terms of usability, performance, power management and the browser experience,” the blog post reads.

While announcing the software support schedule for the Xperia X2, the company also revealed one state of facts that won't make the device as appealing as one might have hopped it would be: “it won’t ever go onto Windows Mobile 7, it won’t support the hardware.” This is bad news for enthusiasts, though that doesn't necessarily mean that the sales will be affected too much. After all, Xperia X2 already got delayed a lot, and some moved towards other options on the market, tired of waiting, not to mention that Windows Mobile 7 is still several months away, and it should be about a year before handsets would be upgraded to the platform, if any phone vendor plans on making this move.
