Mobile phone carrier AT&T has made available for purchase on its airwaves a new handset running under Google's Android operating system, one that also brings along impressive gaming capabilities, namely the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G.

The handset, made official back in February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, comes with a unique sliding gaming pad, and is the first smartphone from Sony Ericsson to have been PlayStation certified.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and sports a series of applications specific to the Xperia family of devices.

At AT&T, the new device features a price tag of $49.99 when purchased with the signing of a two-year contract agreement. The off contract price tag was set at $399.99.

The handset features a 4-inch touchscreen display that can deliver a FWVGA (480 x 854 pixel) resolution, and packs a 1GHz application processor inside, which should provide users with enough performance capabilities.

The mobile phone also sports a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for HD video recording capabilities, as well as a front camera, which should provide users with video calling capabilities.

Moreover, it comes with 1GB of internal memory, and with a microSD memory card slot that can offer support for up to 32GB of external storage space.

Sony Ericsson has also pre-loaded the Xperia PLAY 4G with a series of games that include Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD, Crash Bandicoot, Dungeon Defenders Second Wave, Madden NFL 11, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, and Tower Bloxx My City.

The specs list of the new device also includes WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, HSPA+, built-in GPS receiver, and a 1500 mAh battery that can deliver up to 7.4 hours of talk time, or up to 14.5 days of standby time.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY 4G measures 4.69 x 0.63 x 2.44 inches and weighs in at 6.3 ounces. It can be seen on AT&T's website here.
