According to the latest news on the Web, some European owners of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 smartphone have started to report cracks that appear in their handsets. The problem seems to be affecting mainly the silver version of the device and can be usually spotted near the stylus bay or battery compartment. According to the news, more than 24 cases have been reported as having similar issues.

Also, the handsets that present such problems might have been manufactured in or around the 08W44 to 08W46 production weeks, an assumption based on the sticker in the X1 battery compartment itself. Besides cracks, some devices are also reported to have flaking paint. Aside from the fact that the building dates are close to one another, it seems that there is no specific connection between carrier and country, as both branded and unbranded devices are reported to have issues, in countries like the UK, Germany, Netherlands and France.

Sony Ericsson NL already made an official statement on the matter, pointing towards the fact that only a small number of devices were affected by this problem. The company also said that it planned on examining the handsets on a case-by-case basis. In addition, the X1 shell or, rarely, the whole smartphone will be replaced, in situations in which the damage does not look as being done on purpose.

According to Sony Ericsson, the problem has been encountered in a small number of handsets. “We only received a relatively small amount.” The manufacturer acknowledges this problem but it will investigate every individual case like a unique one. “When a housing is completely wrecked it is obvious that the owner did something weird. When there are only a few cracks and nothing further then there is a big chance that this is covered by warranty.” When the cracks aren’t very significant, the housing will be replaced. In extreme situations the phone will be replaced” is what Sony Ericsson NL commented.

I've currently got the same fault with my X1 and its with the SE repair centre now. they have told me its out of warrenty even though I brought it in Septemebr 08 and they have made me pay £40.54 for what they class as a cosmetic repair. I read them out the the wording on this website and they told me that Sony have no reported faults of this type on there systems and they never maid any offical statments saying that they would replae the shell or the hole phone if they they could see the damage wasnt caused on purpose.. I asked them if this web site is printing a false statment from SE and they just repeted their previous statment saying that they never made any statment to that effect. I have had many SE handsets int he past but I will certainly not be purchasing nay more in the future.. Thanks SE your the best!

I would not recommend getting until SONY Ericsson resolves the casing crack issues. My heart goes out to you Manish. This is true for my silver Xperia has develop crack today (10th April-2009). I bought it in February 2009. The crack is at the corner of battery near to the camera and the volume control button. I have brought it to the the attention of SONY Ericsson, service centre. And I hope that they would acknowledge it, and replace it with a new and different batch. My guess is that they are using a cheap plastic that would not be able to take the stress, thus crack. Couple the heat that has been generated by the battery, it will accelerate and reduce the lifetime of the plactic, ie reduce the allowable stress of the plastic. It seems that Sony Ericsson has decided not to use HTC anymore for the production of Xperia. I think there is quality issue on the Sony Ericsson Xperia models.

I have sent my complain to SE service centre and they are laying claim that such crack are subjected to excess forces. They have mentioned that they would give me a discount for the plastic body and request that let them knows which service centre I am going to. I am quite furious that they insinuate that I have subjected my phone to excessive force that is why it cracked. They are not admitting that there are design flaws. And mentioned in Malaysia there has not been any complain so far. And I am the first one. If anyone from Malaysia who has the similar problem let’s get together and see what we can do about it collectively.

It looks like this is still an issue... my Xperia X1 has just started cracking in exactly the same places as the article illustrates plus an area above the camera lens. My phone is over a year old but has not been dropped or any excessive "stress" applied to the case...

WAS USING SONY ERICSSON UNTIL XPERIA X1,, WHEREIN SUB STANDARD CHASSIS DESIGN / MATERIAL WAS USED. THEY HAVE LOST ME AND A LOT OF CUSTOMERS AND GOOD WILL WITH THIS FAULTY PRODUCTION AND A SUBSEQUENT DENIAL OF THIS FAULT.
