After many months of hard work, the guys over XDA managed to crack Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 bootloader, which means that development of custom ROMs will be possible in the future

[ADMARK=1The first such ROM is in its pre-alpha stage and installs the latest iteration of Google's mobile platform, Android 2.2 Froyo.

Apparently, Froyo 2.2.1 ROM for Xperia X10 is a fresh and clean build with no custom modifications, but is not yet fully suitable as main operating system.

Users anxious to try it out are recommended to dual boot their device, as the pre-alpha version of the Froyo is buggy.

“The alpha build is compiled with engineering and debug flags, so please don't expect it to be fast or stable. It definitely will lag and crash every now and then.”

This is the first step towards developing a fully working Android 2.2 (Froyo) ROM for the Xperia X10 smartphone. The reason behind this release is to get end-user's feedback, so that bugs and issues in the pre-alpha build can be corrected quickly.

The next Beta version of the custom ROM is expected to be available in several days, but the developers haven't disclosed a release date yet.

The developers of the custom ROM stated that the Beta version will be flashable and ready to be used as main system, but that users trying the pre-alpha build should have their devices dual boot.

The following known issues have already been identified and will be fixed in the next version of the ROM:

- no Audio playback (voice calls work) - no native Video playback (RockPlayer works) - camera - not implemented yet - random reboots (identified - WIP) - random lags (identified - WIP) - slight radio issue - voice calls - sometimes (1 out of 25-30 for me) both you and the other person sound like a chipmunk (identified - WIP)

As a side note, the new custom ROM requires 1GB of free space on SD card and the smartphone needs to be rooted with busybox installed.
