Sony Ericsson recently launched a new handset for the Japanese market, the W62S, via KDDI au, Japan's second largest mobile operator.

First announced at the beginning of 2008, Sony Ericsson W62S is a clamshell phone that was, most probably, created especially for the needs of Japan's mobile users. The new device is made out of lightweight but durable aluminum and has a simple, elegant design, resembling most of the clamshells released in Japan. A worth-mentioning aspect is the phone's keypad, which comes with a very nice lighting feature (see the images at the end of the article).

Sony Ericsson W62S packs a wide 2.7 inch internal display with 240 x 432 pixels and support for 6.5 million colors, an external 1.1 OLED screen for quickly viewing details like incoming or missed calls, GSM and CDMA / EV-DO connectivity, GPS (maps included), a 2.0 Megapixel camera with auto focus, digital zoom and video recording (in QVGA mode), high-end speakers with 3D stereo surround, email and Internet capabilities, pre-installed games, document viewer, 60MB of internal memory and microSD card slot for up to 2GB.

The new Sony Ericsson handset weighs 119 grams, measures 101 x 48 x 16.9 millimeters (when closed) and includes an 870 mAh battery capable of providing up to 240 minutes in talk-time mode and up to 350 hours in stand-by.

KDDI au offers the W62S clamshell in three color versions: silver / black, black / red and white / green. The phone's price is not listed for the moment, but it's surely not an affordable one. Sony Ericsson will probably not release the new handset in other countries except Japan, so those who like the W62S and don't live there have little chances to ever get their hands on it. Anyway, we can still enjoy the available images with the device:
