Sony Ericsson W380, the mid to low-end Walkman clamshell released in Europe back in March, is now available for purchase in Canada, as Sony Ericsson W380a, being brought to Canadian users by Fido.

W380 is offered by Rogers' subsidiary for $60 with a contract agreement for three years or $160 with a two-year agreement. The handset can also be bought for $300, free of contract or with Fido's Prepaid Service. All prices are in Canadian dollars and will also get you, besides the W380 itself, a 512 MB Memory Stick Micro card, a stereo headset and a USB cable.

The highlights of the new W380 are the gesture control feature (which allows you to put calls on mute or silence the alarm without touching the device) and the funky external music control keys. The phone is bound to be successful among teens or users who want a good music handset but don't want to pay a lot of money for it.

The other specs of the clamshell include: an internal TFT display with 176 x 220 pixels and 262K colors, an external 36 x 128 pixel display, tri-band GSM connectivity with GPRS and EDGE, Walkman

player (with support for MP3, MIDI, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, iMelody, AMR and AMR-NB), FM radio, Web and email capabilities, Instant Messaging, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, UISB 2.0, a 1.3 Megapixel camera, pre-installed games and expandable memory (up to 2GB).

Weighing 100 grams and measuring 92 x 49 x 16 millimeters (when closed), the W380 packs a battery that should last up to 7 hours in talk-time mode and up to 300 hours in stand-by (the actual times will be lower, though).

My wife and I each have a gray W80a. We bought them because we liked the form factor, the keypad, and the general list of features. We don't game and we don't surf; we just needed a good solid phone.

Well, after about half a year of fairly moderate use, the keypads on both our phones are giving us trouble, big time! It seems to vary in severity, but at its worst I have to punch a button several times to get it to register. It's most frustrating and it REALLY slows down phone usage when you can't reliably type on the keypad. Now, maybe we just got a couple of phones from a bad batch, but I'd be very interested in other peoples experiences (I've been Googling but haven't found anything significant yet).

Suggestions?
