Sony Ericsson W350i Review

Low-budget flip handset with retro look

Enlarge picture
The new Sony Ericsson W350i is a mid-level ranged mobile phone that adds to the Walkman series portfolio. As it has been a long time since a famous handset manufacturer launched a flip phone, W350i brings back the Sony Ericsson's T series feeling. Revamped and improved, W350i's design has that special retro look that will certainly make it as an 'eye-catcher' device. The public targeted is definitely going to love it, while those that are looking for a camera-phone or business-oriented device will probably hate it. In the end, it's all about personal preferences.

Announced in January 2008, Sony Ericsson W350i was launched on the market in May 2008. The flip phone is available in four different color versions: Graphic white, Ice blue, Electric black and Hypnotic black. Those interested in a good-looking mid-level handset can acquire it for around $230 USD.

Design

The handset is made of pure plastic; it looks more like a toy rather than a cheap phone. The backside cover is made from a rubber-like plastic, while the rest is lusterless plastic. The device strongly resembles Sony Ericsson's T series, with its flip clap and retro design. The thin flip looks really flimsy and features external music controls. These offer haptic feedback when they're pressed. Actually, the user pushes the numeric keypad when using the external controls.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Even if the phone looks small and compact, I was disappointed by the flimsy flip, which can be easily damaged when frequently used. Above the flip, there's a very small display protected by scratch resistant plastic. Near the bottom left of the screen, there is a small light sensor which adjusts the backlighting of the keypad. On right side of the phone, there is a dual volume key that can also be used to mute an incoming call (one press) or to simply reject it (two presses). The left side features a small dedicated button that will open up the Walkman interface when the flip is not closed or show the music player menu when the flip is closed. Lower on the left side, there is the proprietary Sony Ericsson port used to charge the phone or to attach the headphones in the sales package. On top of the device, there is a small key that controls the locking mechanism of the external music keys placed on the thin flip.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

The backside of the phone features a small unprotected 1.3 Megapixel camera at the top and a small loudspeaker at the bottom. The back cover is so slim that you can actually see through it (I'm joking!). Even so, it is extremely flexible, thus reducing the chances to break it. When flipped down, the phone reveals a comfortable keypad, visible even under low light conditions thanks to the very good backlighting system. While the big D-pad controller is reasonably responsive, the keys offer an excellent tactile experience, which makes texting a smooth and enjoyable experience. Moreover, the phone's flip can be opened with one hand, thus improving its functionality.
Review imageReview imageReview image

The phone is lightweight (80g including battery) and small in size (104 x 43 x 10.5 mm), which will surely attract fans of mid-level devices. Overall, Sony Ericsson W350i looks compact and slim, but also 'old' and flimsy. Its retro aspect has already attracted lots of fans, but quite some enemies as well.

Display and Camera

Sony Ericsson W350i features a very small (1.9 inches) TFT display that supports 262k colors and 176x220 pixels resolution. The screen is perfectly visible in strong sunlight conditions and may be reckoned as one of the best in its range. Unfortunately, its small size takes away all the fun and considerably limits functionality. Check out the various benchmark results scored by Sony Ericsson W350i's display.
Review imageReview image

Review imageReview image

The 1.3 Megapixel camera features no enhancements (i.e. flash, autofocus, macro) and it is not protected. Moreover, it lacks video capabilities and shake control functions. The maximum resolution of the snapshots is 1280x1024 pixels and the camera interface is standard for this range of phone.
Review imageReview imageReview image

There are some features that can be used with the camera: Shoot mode (Normal, Burst), Effects (Black&White, Negative and Sepia), White balance (Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Incandescent), Picture quality (Normal and Fine), Night Mode and Shutter sound. These functions merely make the pictures bigger or smaller in size, rather than improve the quality of the snapshots.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Those looking for a phone with a good camera should avoid Sony Ericsson W350i, as it only offers basic picturing capabilities. As seen in the samples below, quality is mediocre when pictures are taken in very good light conditions; otherwise, they will be full of noise, especially those taken indoors.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Menu and Software

W350i features the same interface that has lately been embedded in all Sony Ericsson low- and mid-budget handsets. Featuring Flash Lite support enables users to change the phone's appearance beyond recognition. The menu is user-friendly and won't raise difficulties to owners.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

There are few productivity tools that can be used such as Alarms (limited to 5), Tasks, Notes, Calendar, Timer, Stopwatch, Calculator, Code memo and a basic File manager. The Gallery can be found through the File manager in the folder called Camera album and can also be accessed through the camera interface menu. The Internet icon, as the name suggests, gives users access to basic Web browsing. The Radio only works when the wired earphones are inserted.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Then, there are the usual shortcuts that will give the user access to some of the handset's functions: Walkman (opens up the music player), Messaging, Calls, Contacts and Settings. The Entertainment sub-folder contains a few functions more or less specific to the Walkman series devices: TrackID, MusicDJ, Video player, Record sound and Games (QuadraPop, Guitar Rock Tour and Extreme Air Snowboarding).
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

The Java emulator works with just about any compatible application, like games or productivity software. Overall, SE's W350i user-interface offers quite a number of features and medium functionality at a low price.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Communication

The flip phone has GPRS and EDGE Class 10 technology, but lacks any 3G capability. Fortunately, you won't have any trouble if you're into Web-browsing, as speed is very good for a mid-level phone (142 Kbit/s download and 61 Kbit/s).
Review image

The device also embeds Bluetooth 2.0 technology with A2DP support, which does its job fairly (41 KB/s sending and 45 KB/s receiving).
Review imageReview image

The specific Sony Ericsson port placed on the left side of the phone enables users to connect it to a PC via a USB cable, but also the ability to charge the battery.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

In terms of messaging, the phone accepts standard text messages, MMS (300 KB attachments), flash and sound messages, as well as emails. The message client works with POP3, SMTP, and IMAP4 protocols and supports several email accounts.
Review image

The triband (GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900) network compatible flip phone has a good GSM signal reception. The sound is above average in quality at both ends and pretty loud. Unfortunately, I have experienced frequent interruptions during phone calls, even in areas with good GSM signal reception. The vibration alert is somewhat mediocre in intensity and cannot be set to higher levels.

Processor and Memory

Sony Ericsson W350i is powered by an ARM9 family processor running at speeds of up to 126 Mhz. This is pretty solid for a mid tier device like Sony Ericsson W350i.
Review image

I have experienced no hiccups or lags when using Java applications or browsing the menus. I have tested the device with JBenchmark Pro, and you can see the results below.
Review imageReview image

Review image

The handset has only 14MB user free internal memory, but this can be expanded, as the phone features an M2 slot card.
Review imageReview image

That can be found under the back hood near the battery (not under), which means that it's hot-swappable. Furthermore, Sony Ericsson W350i comes with a 512MB M2 memory card in the sales package, but it also supports 2GB M2 memory cards.
Review image

Multimedia

Sony Ericsson W350i flip phone doesn't feature any high-end multimedia function, so don't expect more than medium quality sound. Anyway, because it adds to the Walkman series portfolio, the phone includes features that are only available for this series' handsets. One of them is the Mega-Bass equalizer setting specific and the Walkman music player 2.0. The latter can be run in the background while listening to music.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

The default skin of the music player can be changed and visualization effects displayed for more in-depth multimedia experience. There's also an FM radio with RDS function that stores up to 20 base stations, and can also be run in the background. The HPM-64 wired stereo headset included in the sales package offers medium quality sound, but can be replaced by 3.5 mm headphones.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

The loudspeaker has been placed at the base of the backside and sounds average in intensity. Even if the phone cannot record clips, Sony Ericsson included a Video player which can play movies in full screen mode. The MusicDJ and TrackID features are also included to make things nicer. Overall, Sony Ericsson's W350i offers above average multimedia experience, but that's not a surprise for a Walkman series handset.
Review imageReview image

Battery

W350i flip phone uses a Li-Polymer 900 mAh standard battery that has a standby time of 300 hours and up to seven hours of talk time. Actually, the phone's battery exhausted after about five hours of talk time and a little bit over 200 hours in standby mode. The playback time is around 12-14 hours, and I would not expect less from a Sony Ericsson Walkman series handset. Overall, W350i's battery performance reflects the quality of the device - above average.
Review imageReview image

Impressions

Classy and stylish, Sony Ericsson W350i reminded me (with pleasure) of the T series handset that was highly regarded in the past. Its retro look aroused my interest the first time I laid my eyes on it. Very nice to the touch, balanced, slim and compact, Sony Ericsson W350i is one of the few low-budget phones that I would buy.

The Good

There are quite a few nice features that make W350i a good choice as a low-budget phone. Exquisite design, good quality multimedia features, above average battery and the possibility to expand its storage space make Sony Ericsson's W350i worth every penny. I cannot miss the low price of the handset, which turns it more appealing to the fans of the Swedish-Japanese company.

The Bad

I have found that not always a high quality display is enough for a handset; it also has to be a large one. The 1.9 inches TFT screen is surely too small for a multimedia-oriented handset and is definitely one important slack of the flip phone. Also, even if it looks compact, after using it for one month, I have discovered that it is a little bit flimsy, especially due to its thin flip. The last negative point 'scored' by W350i is the low quality camera, which should've been at least 2 Megapixel or not at all.

Sales package

900 mAh Li-Polymer Battery (BST-37)
512 MB M2 memory card
Wired stereo headset (HPM-64)
USB data cable
Charger

Sony Ericsson PC Suite CD

I like this phone. For 60 GBP it represents pretty good value. Unfortunately I have never been able to get my w350i to play a single video file. I have tried avi, xvid, divx, mpeg, mp4, 3gp, 3g2 and can't get a single one of them to work. So I contacted Sony Ericsson for some support, and here is their reply:
___

Dear xxx,

Thank you for your query regarding the Sony Ericsson W350i.

Unfortunately the W350i is not designed for video playback therefore this is why you have been unable to view videos on your handset.

We apologise sincerely for any inconvenience this may cause.

Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again for further help and support.
___

I got 2 manuals - a paper one and a copy on the PC Suite disc. Both describe how to use the VIDEO PLAYER on page 45. The Sony Ericsson website descibes the w350i as having a video clip player and a media player and the supplied software tells you to drag and drop video files. So I can only assume the people at Sony Ericsson would rather fob me off than give me the support I am asking for. If anyone has managed to get videos playing on their w350i, please get in touch or post how!

"W350I" Smart looks, slim, Attractive But........ Iam highly disappointed wit dis phone. I read the comment above and it states tht this phone is not designed for video! Fine...... But how is it tht i could play one video & not the other ? I added 2 video's both were in 3gp format one plays but not the other ! Or else..
Can we download some software tht can support video's ? Kindly Advise....

Comment #7.2 by: karthik on 01 Jul 2009, 14:06 GMT

dude..only two formats are supported 3gp and gcf...gcf is nt a common format..so i convert videos to 3gp using ABC 3GP CONVERTER..it allows u to select the correct resolution and the amr codec which comes with it for audio suits ur mobile..remb it doesnt support 3gp2..try it

Comment #10 by: gravitron on 25 Sep 2008, 12:08 GMT reply to this comment

this is just a showpiece and nothing else... the SE guys have exagerated
everything about this phone .. it's a worst entry level walkman phone .
the video player does not support fullscreen playback and inspite being equipped with a 1.3 MP camera it can't even record videos . the keypad
is made of cheap material and it's quite irritating to use it (& the phone itself).. mp3 player does not support major audio formats like .aac, .aac+ etc. & most irritating feature is its standby mode the backlight goes off
just after 6 secs.. and also the keys on the flip needs to be preesed twice to
change tracks and all that...

Comment #11 by: Narutov2 on 02 Oct 2008, 06:33 GMT reply to this comment

This phone and the w580i is available at at&t for sale or with contract. I didn't even know about the w350i till i heard a commercial on radio about how good this was, i went in the store to test out the phone, but i own a w580i and i say w350i is no where near the level of 580i. W580i is 30 dollars more without contract and is much more worth it since it has 20 hours music playback and 2 megapixel camera and loud speakers. and if you open a two year plan, you get either for free, so again, which phone is better?? W580i!!!! this phone looks like the w880i but its lower in quality and that flip thing would snap right off if dropped. so in my opinion, w350i looks like a 25 dollar mp3 player to me.

Hi, i use the same model. SE supports only mp3 audio format. There are wma, asf, mp4, etc to mp3 converters available online, dowload the software, & convert any file to mp3 format.

I have had this phone now for 5 months and i am having to take it back on friday because the flip is starting to crack and if i flip it down it is going to break off. The bit at the top that says Sony Ericsson is peeling off and makes the phone look horrible.
I know a lot of people with this phone and they all have had to take it back because of the same problem.
I know it is nothing i have done because i look after my phones well because i want them to last, normally i have a phone for about a year but i have never had a phone and have ha

I have just got this phone and can't get it to play any video 3gp files. It saves them as audio so the above reply from SE would make sense to me. How or why they are selling it with a video player I don't know? Maybe to get more sales?

Comment #17 by: Drealar on 30 Dec 2008, 08:24 GMT reply to this comment

I am a happy 5 month old user of this phone since its launch. It's quite sad to read that most comments comes from users with a defect unit or are just plain bad at handling their phone. It makes wonder since none of what you guys are complaining happened to my phone even after 5 month.

Another thing is that you guys are just so ignorant to even look up the spec and read up the reviews before buying it. What's worse is that you people are complaining about what the phone is not intended to be in the first place!

After using several PDAs, 3MP 3G cameraphones, and borrowing friend's smartphone; I myself decided to go with the simplest phone that's small, light, cheap, have what I want, exclude all that I don't use/need, and yet must be stylish.

I don't need/use: 3G(bad local reception)/GPS/Wifi, camera, video capability, big/bulky/heavy form, ugly.

I do need: EDGE(best n reliable here), LED(for torch), music player, small/light form to fit into my shirt's pocket, and still is stylish.

After buying this phone, I end up using 85%~90% of what I paid for and using ~70% of the features. In my experience with other high-end gadget, on average is below 60% usage of the features.

The flip is a plus since I don't have to worry about lock/unlock keypad. The camera though, like the reviewer Cosmin Vasile said, should be at least 2MP or no at all, and I'd go for no at all, then substitute it with LED instead, if I ever had that choice. I bought it during a sale of 10%~15% discount and I really feel my time surveying and doing research was paid off. So next time do research be a smart buyer and handle your phone with care!! I even considered some from Nokia and LG, but the flip is the winning factor.

M planning to go for W350i but the comments have really put me into deep thinking.
There are hardly any comments in the favour of the handset
M quite confused!

Comment #25 by: Anmol on 12 Mar 2009, 19:30 GMT reply to this comment

The music quality is awesome. If you are a music lover, then go for it. But for photos you may choose another phone as it just has a basic camera which captures EXCELLENT photos in good and bad lighting conditions both. For camera there are 'C' series, go find some in 'C' series then But in all, a good phone.

Comment #26 by: Nigel Taylor on 01 Apr 2009, 17:09 GMT reply to this comment

The flip is very weak and breaks after about 6 months use. Sony then charge a ridiculous £21.84 to repair. Quite frankly this phone has a design fault in the flip and is a flaw waiting to break.

Comment #27 by: Ravenclaw on 18 Apr 2009, 17:28 GMT reply to this comment

My W350i slipped from my hand and hit the floor several times, but it's ok until now. The back cover fall off, but didnt' break. In general I'm very please with my side-kick, even the camera didn't work optimal where the light is minimum. BUT...with it price, all the features and sound quality is above the other brand with the same price such as Nokia, Motorola, etc.

Comment #28 by: Riyucchi on 30 Apr 2009, 05:24 GMT reply to this comment

I've had this phone for a little over a month.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty decent phone. I've (so far) not had problems with the back falling of, the flip breaking etc. The only thing that has changed it's appearence since i got it is, the "arrow" button (It is the silver button in the middle) is losing a little paint.

It's slightly annoying because the phone does not play WMA files and doesn't appear to play videos (I have only tried .avi so and .wmv so far)

I'd reccomend it if you don't mind the low camera resolution.

(Sorry if my English is bad)

I take this phone to my little son right today and was highly surprised while found this phone don't playsback 3gp. His previous phone w200 does it easily. I asked exactly the same q. to SE and still not gave any answer. Isn't XXI century today tha that handy don't play videos?

I have this phone for about 3 months, well... i like it but i dont like whats happening to him. on the both sides, the tint is coming off!! The back has broken thingys and in one day, i have to tape it -.-. The music player is ok, but it could be louder. An xpressmusic is A LOT louder then this. I mean, walkman makes MP3's and Xpress doesnt, should'nt this be louder? Everyday, I'm scared that the flip will fall out. I bought this for 79,90 euros from Vodafone. If i could, i would go back and NEVER bought this phone. Im never gonna by another SE!!! Next time. ill buy a LG KS360. That phone looks good... At least better than this one. Dont buy it, if you dont want to waste money.

what do you expect in a very low-cost phone? if you complain about the cameras and videos, why not buy a phone which specializes cameras? or buy yourself a video camera?

i just got one a few days ago and it satisfies me. thanks for my sister who gave me this phone. love you, sis! Ü

If you can't get video to properly play then as karthik said on 01 Jul 2009 get ABC 3GP Video Converter, it's free and if you convert it using that then it should play. Unfortunately the Bit rate seems limited not on the app, you can choose up to 256kbps but it seems the SE Media Manager doesn't like it and prevents it from transferring.

The other thing is the sound bitrate, it's painfully low at 12.2kbps which was really disappointing because the video i wanted to put on it has a really nice sound track to go along with it and it sounds quite nasty. I was actually thinking about transferring the original just for the sound cause it's a cool track but meh, doesn't seem the same when you have commentary in it without the video.

Anyway, ABC 3GP Video Converter @ 96kbps (15 FPS worked, high bp didn't) and it should play.

Thanks karthik.

PS. Someone should tell em, what's the name, ah yea, Sony Ericsson?
