Along the other eight new Sony Ericsson devices unveiled today, the Swedish-Japanese joint-venture has also presented two multi-functional USB modems, named MD400 and MD400g. These new products are introduced by Sony Ericsson as being "the first HSPA USB modems of their kind" and they were created for users who need to access the Internet at any time and anywhere, or for those who simply want an advanced USB modem that also packs extra functions.

Besides the high data transfer speeds that users can achieve with MD400 and MD400g (up to 7.2 Mbps when downloading and up to 2.0 Mbps when uploading), the two USB modems also come with a slot for both Memory Stick Micro and microSD cards, plus a PlayNow shortcut link. Even more, the MD400g has built-in GPS, allowing users to access Google Maps for location and direction info.

Besides the presence (and lack) of GPS, the new USB modems are basically the same, both in features and design. They weigh 28 grams and measure 70 x 28 x 15 millimeters (when open), and have two antennas, an internal and an external one, the latter having the ability to swivel, enhancing this way the overall performance.

Talking about the new multi-functional USB modems, Johan Tysklind, Marketing Director of Mobile Computing at Sony Ericsson, said, "The MD400 and MD400g are high performance and stylish devices that enable you to have all your essentials at hand even when you are out of reach from broadband at home or in the office. The USBs are simple, quick to install and the multiple technologies guarantee Internet access every time. The combined M2 Memory Stick Micro and the microSD slot really makes these products stand out from the crowd and the MD400g even includes a GPS receiver."

Sony Ericsson MD400 and MD400g will be available in two color versions, black and white, starting the fourth quarter of this year. Their prices have not been announced yet.
