Japanese Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson is among the first vendors in the world to promise the Android 4.0 update for its latest Android-based handsets. The company has just confirmed that all of its Xperia handsets launched during the ongoing year will be upgraded to the upcoming Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform release.

The leading handset vendor confirmed that all of the current Xperia phones, including the Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY or the Xperia ray, come with support for the next flavor of Android, a recent article on SoMobile reads.

For the time being, the mobile phone maker did not offer a specific release time frame for the update, but we know that Google is set to make the new OS version officially available sometime in October or November.

The Xperia smartphones are based on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform flavor, and Sony Ericsson is currently working on coming up with another update for them, bringing the Android 2.3.4 OS version on them.

The company confirmed a few weeks ago that this software update will arrive starting with October, which means that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS version will be released for them after this update arrives.

The next Android release is expected to bring along a unification of the platform, with the same features and capabilities available both on smartphones and on tablet PC.

Among the enhancements this OS upgrade will deliver, we can count a new user interface, along with multitasking launcher, support for new applications, and some other new features as well, including a ‘Virtual Camera Operator,’ which is supposedly similar to Microsoft Kinect.

The video calling features of Android should be enhanced with this feature through face recognition. At the same time, the next Android OS will bring peer-to-peer NFC functionality, along with a series of other connectivity improvements as well.

As soon as the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS version becomes official, Sony Ericsson will unveil more on its plans for releasing the update to Xperia devices, so stay tuned.
