It's coming. Maybe. Maybe not.

Sony Ericsson set the mobile gamers on fire with its PSP phone patent which surfaced this summer. Since then, officials confirmed the possibility of such a device hitting the market, then denied it, then brought it up again only to infirm it.

Towards the end of August, Peter Ahnegard, the Partner Manager Games and Graphics made an official statement and said that a Sony Ericsson PSP phone is definitely coming, although he could not reveal a date when it would hit the market. One thing is for sure. The handset producer was seriously considering the possibility of bringing out such a device, but didn't start working at it.

Sony Ericsson stated one month later that they are more interested in developing their current lines of Walkman and Cybershot. A new gaming line of mobile phones would take up a huge amount of resources and would mean less financing for the already existing ones.

A recent statement started rumors again, as Sony Computer Entertainment co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan said that a Playstation Phone is a future possibility: "The playstation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible".

We're done with that, as Sony Computer Entertainment officials said that it was only a misunderstanding and that the two companies are not discussing such a possibility. This should get things clear once and for all, although there are high chances of such rumors surfacing again in the future.

A Sony Ericsson PSP phone using Sony's experience with portable games could result in a great device and a big success once it hits the market. It looks like the two companies are not willing to take the risk of such a major release on the market. Official statements show that such a project is not a priority for them right now, although things might very well change in the future.
