Sony Ericsson is preparing the launch of new smartphones during the ongoing year, some of which should make an official appearance as soon as next week during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, while others are expected at MWC in February.

One of the devices that Sony Ericsson might launch during 2012 would be a successor of last year's Sony Ericsson Xperia neo.

The handset has just been spotted in a leaked photo, featuring the model number MT27i. Moreover, it sports the codename of Pepper.

This is not the first time we learn of this name, though no official details on the smartphone have emerged until now.

However, it appears that it won't be long before the new mobile phone becomes available, though there are little chances that it will make it to CES next week.

Instead, we should expect it to make an official appearance in late February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, most probably along with some other new smartphones from Sony Ericsson.

Until that happens, however, we can have a look at the new device via the aforementioned leaked images, which are complemented by some rumored specifications on the mobile phone.

When launched, the mobile phone should include a 1GHz dual-core application processor, said to be manufactured by ST-Ericsson. Chances are that it will be the NovaThor U8500 chip.

Moreover, the new smartphone will pack a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, capable of delivering a FWVGA resolution.

On the back, the upcoming Sony Ericsson device will sport a 5-megapixel photo snapper capable of recording videos in 720p HD resolution.

The new handset will run under Google's Android operating system. Gingerbread is expected to power it in the beginning, though an update to Ice Cream Sandwich could arrive soon after launch.
