Sony Ericsson has just announced that they have joined the WiMAX Forum. It is one step further, as Sony Ericsson is the last of the leading mobile phone technology producers that have managed to join this Forum.

WiMAX offers to mobile phone users high-speed internet access over large distances. Actually, WiMAX is more efficient even than Wi-Fi technology, which also provides internet access, only on more limited areas.

"Sony Ericsson's membership in the WiMAX Forum is a logical step as we seek to understand the technology and the opportunities in the marketplace", declared Mats Lindoff, Chief Technology Officer at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB. this comes as a result of the fact that "Sony Ericsson is committed to delivering state-of-the-art technological services and solutions to our customers", or at least so Mats Lindoff has said.

The WiMAX Forum that Sony Ericsson has just joined is an industry-led non-profit organization. More than 440 companies are already part of this community. Among them, there are some of the most important technology producers, including Acer, Alcatel, AT&T, Cisco, Hitachi, IBM, Microsoft, Mitac, Motorola, NTT, Nokia, Samsung and many others.

In order to join this organization, a mobile phone company must pass conformance and interoperability tests. This means that they are now "WiMAX Forum Certified" and, from this point on, the WiMAX Forum logo will be displayed on the company's products. The logo stands as an assurance that the products are capable of providing WiMAX services at high performances.

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access and uses the IEEE 802.16 standard. It sometimes passes as a 4G mobile phone Internet technology, due to the efficiency of speed and range combined. WiMAX delivers wireless broadband services to residential customers and businesses too at higher, considerably more evolved standards.
