Today, a new Android-based device from Sony Ericsson made an appearance, namely the Xperia active, which was launched at the CommunicAsia 2011 conference in Singapore along with the previously detailed Xperia ray. The new mobile phone comes with a 3-inch touchscreen with the Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, and runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

The handset also packs a 1GHz application processor, along with a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for recording videos in HD quality.

However, the most interesting feature that the new mobile phone comes to the market with is the fact that it is dust proof and water resistant, and that it comes with wet finger tracking, which should ensure great performance even when the user touches it screen with wet fingers. The new mobile phone also comes loaded with a series of sport apps that are meant to offer consumers the possibility to easily track their fitness levels, the handset vendor explains.

Not to mention that it comes with a built-in GPS, Barometer and Compass, on-screen heart rate and pulse for real-time monitoring (via ANT+ wireless networking technology), and more.

The new Xperia active also comes to the market with an iMapMyFitness application, designed to monitor user's daily performance, as well as with the Facebook inside Xperia application so that users can stay connected at all times with their friends.

The new mobile phone measures 55 x 92 x 16.5mm, weighs in at 110.8 grams, and packs a 1200mah removable battery.

It also comes with 320MB of internal memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space (a 2GB card included in the package), as well as with WiFi, Bluetooth, DLNA capabilities, and more.

Fredrik Månsson, Global Product Marketing Manager, Sony Ericsson said: “Xperia active is the ultimate smartphone for an active life."

"Not only is it packed with all the features and applications consumers need for a worry free mobile life, it also comes with a set of accessories that make it fun and easy for them to take it everywhere, whatever their daily plans are.”

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread-based Sony Ericsson Xperia active should arrive on shelves in Q3 in color flavors that include Orange band with black back cover, and White band with black back cover.
