The Sony Ericsson Elm is currently considered to be the most sustainable mobile phone on the UK market, the Japanese-Swedich mobile phone maker announced today.

According to the company, the handset was awarded 4.3 out of 5 for its green credentials in the first sustainable rating system for mobile phones, the O2 Eco rating.

A number of 65 devices were taken into consideration for this competition, coming from six mobile phone makers around the world, the Sony Ericsson Elm managed to stand up in the crowd.

Moreover, it seems that a number of fiver handsets out of 10 best rated were designed by Sony Ericsson, which shows Sony Ericsson’s ethical performance as a manufacturer.

“Sony Ericsson is committed to delivering products with the best possible environmental performance in the industry,” said Mats Pellbäck Scharp, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Sony Ericsson.

“That’s why we’re pleased the Sony Ericsson Elm phone has been rated the most sustainable mobile phone in the industry. We fully support the new O2 Eco rating system - through initiatives such as this, consumers have the information they need to make informed green choices,” he continued.

The handset has been included in the company's GreenHeart family of devices, which was created to show Sony Ericsson's commitment to make an impact to green innovation.

According to the handset vendor, the results of its actions in this area should impact the environment, consumers and mobile operators altogether. Moreover, the GreenHeart strategy should influence all devices it pushes to the market in the future.

When it comes to its mobile phone's full product lifecycle, the leading mobile phone maker is determined to reducing CO2 emissions by 20 per cent and greenhouse emissions by 15 per cent by 2015.

“Sony Ericsson’s commitment to sustainability has also seen the mobile phone manufacturer join forces with an alliance of public interest organisations to persuade the European Parliament to ban the use of hazardous substances in consumer electronics from 2015 onwards,” the company concluded.
