Xperia X10 users out there should start the party, as Sony Ericsson confirmed officially that they would be able to get the Android 2.1 operating system on their devices come Sunday, October 31st, 2010. After a few months' wait, all Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro devices in the wild would be upgraded from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1.

The software update will start arriving on devices on Sunday in Nordic countries, with the roll-out expected to continue in the following weeks, throughout the month of November.

“Today I can confirm that we will start the roll-out of the Android 2.1 based updates for Xperia X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro now this coming Sunday. The roll out will start in the evening European time,” Sony Ericsson's Rikard Skogberg notes in a blog post.

This would be a phased roll-out, as users would receive the solution at different times, based on various criteria, such as the phone's color, the standard apps on the device, the market they are in, the network, and the like.

Users in more markets would be automatically notified on the availability of the Android 2.1 update for the specific software version on their devices.

The update will be performed via a desktop computer, using the PC Companion software. This is a major update, and users would have to backup all personal data on their phones before starting the process, to make sure they won't lose important info.

According to Sony Ericsson, some of the main enhancements the new software would bring to its devices include:

Xperia X10: • HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1 • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders • Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online

Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro: • Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more • New backup and restore application with extended content back up • Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book • Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1

Some of the features that Xperia X10 devices would provide to their users following the update can be seen demoed in the videos below.
