A new Android-based mobile phone from Sony Ericsson is now official on the Indian market, namely the Xperia active, a rugged device that runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and which offers support for a wide range of great features, services and applications.

The new mobile phone arrives on the market in India with a Snapdragon S2 application processor inside, clocked in at 1GHz, as well as with a 3-inch touchscreen display, and with various other capabilities coming from Sony Ericsson.

The Xperia active is dust proof and water resistant, which enables users enjoy its capabilities even when in harsh environments. Moreover, it comes with a 5-megapixel photo snapper, great for taking photos or shooting videos while on the go.

“The Xperia active is a compact smartphone targeting consumers with an active lifestyle. [...] What’s more, this rugged smartphone uniquely incorporates wet finger tracking, to ensure the phone works perfectly when either the screen or a user’s fingers are wet,” Sony Ericsson notes.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia active will arrive on shelves in India in Black and Gold, featuring the said 3-inch touch screen, a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine for a great viewing experience.

It also comes with a built-in GPS, Barometer and Compass, as well as with support for WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, and with specific software for those who like to work out, such as the iMapMyFitness app.

The handset comes with a series of social features as well, including Facebook inside Xperia, or access to applications via the Android Market, and support for various Google Mobile services. It sports a microSD memory card slot as well.

The phone's screen is scratch resistant, and should make it fit for all those who would like to use it out doors. Sony Ericsson did not offer specific info on the availability of Xperia active in India.
