Sony has been attacking the handheld gaming market with the PlayStation Portable, currently in two iterations, the PSP-3000 and the PSP Go, but it is also rumored to be planning a whole new platform, in the form of the PSP2.

The current generation PSP has been around for quite some time, and while at first it was just rivaling the Nintendo DS, it is now being assaulted from all sides by the new Nintendo DSi or DS XL, the upcoming Nintendo 3DS and not to mention Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, which both have ample gaming capabilities.

That's why rumors concerning a brand new PSP have begun flying around once more, this time saying that it's going to be a whole new device, with improved hardware, not like the recent PSP Go, which only introduced a sliding form factor and no UMD drive.

Sony, as you could imagine, doesn't want to talk about a new PSP device, titled PSP2 or otherwise, but it has revealed that it will most certainly develop another handheld gaming device.

Sony Computer Entertainment exec Shuhei Yoshida revealed that a new device will be made sooner or later, as technology is always progressing, but didn't want to talk about any concrete details or outright confirm that a PSP2 was coming.

Still, he revealed that in case of the PSP Go, which relies only on digital distribution to get games, his company took a big gamble which, as of yet, hasn't really paid off.

As soon as the price for hard drive memory decreases and Internet speeds increase around the world, digital distribution will be feasible for full-length games, not just for small titles, according to Yoshida.

As of yet, the PSP2 is rumored to sport two cameras, one facing the front and the back, a touchscreen interface but also physical buttons, not to mention better hardware specs than the current PSP models.

According to the latest rumor, it will be making its market debut before the 2011 holiday season, so perhaps Sony will want to talk about it in the future.
