Sony is rolling out an A4-sized digital paper device it has been developing for a while now. The gadget combining eReader and tablet features will be launched in Japan and will sell for a pretty bulky price.

This peculiar hybrid features an impressive 13.3-inch touchscreen E-ink display, something that’s not very common on the market today. It features a 1200 x 1600 pixel resolution and is Wi-Fi-enabled.

Sony has developed this device especially for highly specialized businesses and is attaching a hefty price tag too, of about JPY100,000 / $1,000 / $746. It’s actually more expensive than the iPad Air, but the Apple slate covers the popular consumer base, mostly.

The product was developed in order to encourage people working in offices to substitute copying and handwriting on paper with digital solutions. Therefore, images and text are clearly displayed thanks to the 16 levels of gray scale.

Sony claims that the E-Ink Mobius display will allow users to write more easily on the device, when compared to other tablet-stylus combos out there.

The absence of a “touch panel” and glass layers also gives the impression that one is writing directly on the device. The “E Ink Mobius” is capable of running up to 3 weeks on a full charge.
