Sony unveils what could be called the most ridiculous camera ever seen

There has been a lot of talk related to Sony’s unusual selfie-centric camera that looks like a perfume bottle.

While some doubted the validity of such a product, Sony is proving them wrong today by taking the wraps off the new selfie-friendly Cyber-shot DSC-KW1 camera.

As we've told you a few days ago, it’s a lady-friendly selfie camera targeted at women in China, who will have enough money to spend on this expensive piece of equipment.

This week, we got to take a look at the first images depicting the camera and we weren't quite sure whether the device was a smartphone or a snapper, until Sony put up a teaser on its Cyber-shot page.

Now, this ridiculous balmy camera is here in all its (horrible) splendor. It’s a digital camera but unlike your usual digital snapping machine, it's not landscape-friendly. On the contrary, the DSC-KW1 will stand upright and be held like a smartphone.

Why? Because that’s the best way to take selfies of course, and secondly, because a perfume bottle held sideways would look very weird (not that taking photos with a perfume bottle is not).

Leaving the jesting aside, it’s time for a bit of technical data. The camera arrives with a 19.2MP sensor with F2.0 wide-angle and focal length of 21mm (no mention of the rumored curved sensor, sadly).

The lens is pretty huge and lives in what is supposed to be the cap of the bottle. It is rotatable by 180 degrees so if you want to snap a picture of your cat that’s looking pretty on the couch you can do that too.

Furthermore, the camera takes advantage of a 3.3-inch viewfinder display, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi and NFC to make sharing everything easier.

We already know this is a fancy piece of equipment, but Sony is taking things a step further. It has decked the LED flash with two Swarovski crystals, making the camera look even more deluxe.

If you got your heart stolen by this selfie camera already, you should know Sony is taking pre-orders for the device starting today until September 16. The first units will start shipping out in September.

Ladies are given a choice between a few fashionable colors like white, pink, green and purple. Last but not least, the camera does not come cheap and will be sold for about 5,199 RMB which is roughly $845 / €637. Is your selfie passion big enough for you to pay this amount of money?
