The company claims it's not ready for the change yet

While more and more handset makers launch Quad HD smartphones, Sony Mobile announced last year that it doesn't plan on doing the same in the near future.

The Japanese company said last year that Quad HD displays are not worth putting into smartphones mainly due to battery consumption.

Sony claims that trading off battery life for a higher-resolution is not worth it, especially that the improvements are negligible.

Well, that might have been right at that time, but now Sony says that it's simply not ready to launch Quad HD smartphones in the near future.

Not because they aren't worth the trade-off of having your battery depleted faster, but because it's unable to achieve the technology required for such an advancement.

Jonathan Lin, general manager of Sony Mobile's Taiwan branch, said during the Xperia Z3+ that his company has held internal discussions on the matter and reached the conclusion that it needs to wait until significant improvements in display quality and digital image processing technology are made, Focus Taiwan reports.

“At the moment, making the move to 2K technology on 5- to 5.5-inch screens does not seem able to achieve market segmentation, so we have no plans to launch 2K phones,” said Lin.

Quad HD tablets is quite alright

However, Lin also confirmed that Sony would add Quad HD displays in some of its products, just not in smartphones yet. The company's Xperia Z4 will boast a 10.1-inch Quad HD display, which Sony claims will offer better performance than any of the previous Xperia tablets launched.

Even though Sony fans are still waiting for a Quad HD smartphone coming from the Japanese company, it looks like this won't happen anytime soon.

Sony is expected to launch another flagship smartphone next year, so let's hope the company will be ready to embed a Quad HD display in order to be able to compete with Samsung, HTC, LG rivals.
