The series might not get a new installment on either the Vita or the PS3

Publisher Sony has announced that it will take down the online servers for eight of its own SOCOM titles, all of them linked to older platforms like the PS2 and the PSP.

The closure will take place on August 31 and means that gamers will only be able to play the single player campaign of those titles.

The affected video games include:

– on the PlayStation 2 - SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs; SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs; SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs and SOCOM Combined Assault; – on the PlayStation Portable - SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo; SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 2; SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike.

The games are old and low profile enough not to draw too much reaction from the player base, but it’s yet another example of the problems that publishers and developers are creating in the game world when adding always-on components to their single-player titles.
