Sony Breaks Speed (240 Hz) and Contrast (1,000,000:1) Records in LCD HDTVs

Although not directly related to the IFA show taking place in Berlin as we speak, the Japanese company Sony has decided to launch today a huge array of products, LCDs in particular. We've seen earlier the company's (and world's) thinnest LCD, the ZX1, but we're in for many more surprises, since the CE manufacturer has also unveiled a whole bunch of other products, each of them providing certain features rarely (if ever) encountered in the case of other models.

First of all, there are what seem to be just about the fastest high-definition TV sets ever developed, namely the two models included in the W1 series. The KDL-46W1 and KDL-40W1 offer wide display sizes (40 and 46 inches, respectively), provide full HD, 1920 x 1080p resolutions, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, as well as BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing. However, the highlight of the series is the fact that it incorporates Flow Motion 240 Hz technology, twice as fast as most of the other similar products currently available on the market.

Then, there are the models from the XR1 series, which deliver an absolutely amazing dynamic contrast ratio, of 1,000,000:1. This is possible due to the fact that the LCD HDTVs are built around TRILUMINOS three-color LEDs, the ever-present 10-bit BRAVIA Engine 2 processing unit and the Motionflow 120Hz technology (just imagine what would have happened should Sony have incorporated Flow Motion 240 Hz technology in these models as well).

Although Sony seems to be moving quite fast lately, with the models initially launched on the Japanese market soon to arrive in Europe as well, we'll probably have to wait quite a lot before we'll actually be able to experience these highly innovative products first-hand. Moreover, we'll have to prepare quite a hefty sum, since the 55-inch XR1 sells for around 6,500 US dollars, while the 46-inch KDL-46W1 will set you back "just" around $2,600.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .

The 1M contrast ratio has been broken already. The new Samsung 9 series has 2M contrast ratio and uses LED backlighting instead of the basic CCFL.
