Sony has once again talked about its upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld and how it's going to "supersede" regular mobile platforms like phones or tablets, largely because it offers more serious handheld gaming experiences thanks to its dedicated nature.

Mobile gaming is rapidly changing these days, as phones or tablets, supported by various kinds of app stores or markets, are grabbing chunks from the market share of dedicated handheld gaming machines like the Nintendo DS, 3DS or Sony's current PlayStation Portable.

Sony isn't too phased about this growth in popularity of other mobile devices and believes that, with the upcoming PlayStation Vita portable console, true gamers will realize the difference between it and existing devices, and quickly rush to adopt it thanks to the variety of experiences that will appear for it.

Speaking with Investor Place, Sony's hardware marketing director, John Koller, highlighted the company's view on the Vita and its competitors in the real of mobile gaming.

"We firmly believe that PlayStation Vita will supersede the mobile market when launched, and have grand ambitions for a product that is really at the forefront of innovation," said Koller. "The mobile market in the U.S. offers consumers extremely light gaming options. We developed PlayStation Vita after observing a significant addressable market that demands rich, deep handheld gaming."

Sony emphasized its stance time and time again, highlighting that the Vita is going to be differentiated from mobile phones or tablets and, thanks to the variety of games scheduled to appear for it, it's going to be adopted by the same dedicated fanbase of the existing PSP.

The PlayStation Vita is scheduled to appear in its native Japan on December 17, reaching other territories like Europe or North America in early 2012, although a concrete release date has yet to be confirmed.
