A new annual list of companies ranked according to their reputation has been launched by the Reputation Institute and Sony managed to score second place, ahead of videogame world rival Microsoft and newcomer Apple. The “Global Reputation Pulse 2010” report aims to show which companies have “most trust, admiration, respect and good feelings from the general public.” The leading figure in the report is Google.

The “Reputation Pulse Score” for Google was 78.62, created by aggregating the performance of the company, its commitment to innovation and other undisclosed factors, while Sony managed to get 78.47. It's not clear how much of the value is linked with the gaming division, which has made important progress since last year, with the launch of the new PlayStation 3 Slim.

Microsoft was in eleventh place on the list, with a score of 74.47, while Apple was in sixth with 76.29. Interestingly, Nintendo did not make it to the list because it had not generated enough revenue by the time it was compiled.

It's worth noting that companies linked to home and handheld videogaming managed to have quite good progressions when compared to last year, when Microsoft was at 30, Sony lingered at 126 and Apple was out of the top 50. Only Nintendo was in the top ten, at sixth place. It's not clear how much the positions of the abovementioned names are linked to their presence in the gaming world.

The top five companies for 2010 were: Google, Sony, The Walt Disney Company, BMW, and Daimler Mercedes-Benz. With new and innovative projects like Natal and PlayStation Move, which bring motion tracking to the PS3 and the Xbox 360, the move to 3D and the initiative by Google to introduce videogames to its Chrome browser, it would not be a surprise to see Sony, Microsoft and Google lead the reputation chart in the coming year.
