Sony has talked about its great relationship with independent developers and has revealed that, because it isn't a "jerk" when working with smaller studios, it can easily interact with them to bring titles to the PlayStation 4, PS3, or PS Vita.

Sony has emphasized the importance of independent games for quite some time now and the results are beginning to show as quite a few great titles are available on the PS3 and PS Vita via the PlayStation Network.

The future is also looking good, as many indie titles are confirmed for the PlayStation 4, prompting Sony to dub it a renaissance for games.

According to Sony Computer Entertainment America Account Support Manager Nick Suttner, the great relationship has been present for some time, but it's only now that people have realized it.

"We’ve been fairly indie-friendly for a while now on paper, allowing self-publishing on PSN for more than five years," Suttner told Edge.

"In the beginning, we did a pretty poor job at explaining this, so we’ve spent the last 18 months putting the message out there that we’re a very open, easy platform holder to work with. At the same time, we’ve examined the process through the eyes of an indie, eliminating every roadblock and fee that we can along the way."

These efforts to make things easier for independent developers are now paying off and Sony's attitude really fosters the whole relationship, according to Suttner.

"The indie PSN content and announcements you’ve seen so far this year are a direct reflection of those efforts. We’ve discovered the big secret behind indies wanting to work with you is this: don’t be jerks."

Microsoft, Sony's Arch rival in the console business, has taken note of the PlayStation 4's popularity among indie developers and has taken quite a few measures to have similar aspects, like the self-publishing.
