When thinking of 7.1 audio, or even of just 5.1 audio, one's mind usually flies to those speaker systems made of multiple satellites and a subwoofer, but it looks like Sony had something much more portable in mind.

Technology long ago proved that most things a human imagines can eventually be set into practice, and the new headset from Sony can be seen as a small shred of proof.

This is because the company took the sort of sound richness one would usually find in a room equipped with a high-end sound system and packed it all inside a single headset.

The product in question is called MDR-DS6500 and it intended for the Sony PlayStation 3, Blu-ray or DVD Movies, TV programs.

Sony managed to reproduce the soundstage of multi-channel speakers by means of the Virtualphones Technology (VPT).

Sony also made sure that one can customize the surround sound modes to be best suited for gaming, speech or movies.

All this is possible without any sort of need for cables, since the headset uses wireless connectivity, meaning that one can walk around the house and do whatever they wish while listening to music or speaking over the web.

For those that want information on the actual specs, the carrier frequency is of 2.408 -2.473 GHz, while the frequency response is of 12 to 22,000 Hz.

Also, the maximum transmittance distance is of about 100 meters, although the installation location and the surrounding environment will, naturally, affect the range.

Of course, being a wireless device, the headphones need a transmission station, in this case one with a weight of 450 grams and a monolithic design, to go well alongside a HTPC and the like. The headset itself weighs 350 grams and features a monolithic design.

Of course, prospective buyers will have to be ready to part with a bit of their finances. While it is only available for pre-order at the moment, the Sony MDR-DS6500 costs £249.00.
