For quite a low price

Sony is sending word that it will add quite a few interesting games to its PlayStation 3 Greatest Hits collection. That means that the games will be re-released with a new and shiny packaging and for the rather low price of 29.99 dollars, which is half of what a videogame tends to cost on launch. All the games introduced in the Greatest Hits lineup will be on sale on June 16.

The six titles that are being talked about by Sony are: Army of Two and Battlefield: Bad Company from Electronic Arts, Devil May Cry 4 from Capcom, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue from Sony , Metal Gear Solid 4 from Konami and Ratchet, and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction from Sony.

The big news here is, of course, the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which came out last year to tell the end story in the saga of Solid Snake. The release offered a lot of cutscenes, many extraordinary moments and proved that Hideo Kojima can still create videogames able to change the way gamers look at the industry.

By adding more titles to the Greatest Hits line of videogames, Sony is hoping to attract more buyers to the PlayStation 3 gaming console, which has seen less than stellar sales in the first months of 2009.

Sony is probably betting that, with games that are attractive and sport high production values being offered for half the price they cost when initially launched, more gamers will be willing to pay the price of the console, which is higher than that of its rivals, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the Nintendo Wii. If the Greatest Hits move fails, then Sony might come under more pressure regarding a price cut for its gaming device.

Sony's move might work (God, I hope not), but something tells me that in this economy people already have found ways to buy video games inexpensively. A metal Gear Solid 4 can be bought used from online retailers such as amazon for $25 plus shipping. Personally, I buy the vast majority of my video games used from online retailers (I have a wii). If you are willing to wait and buy a game 2-3 months after it has been released, you can pay up to 50% less money.
Which brings me to the real reason why I write these lines :). I, like many I presume, want to buy a PS3, but its high price is a factor that I just cannot "swallow". I have been reading various reports and "analysts'" opinions for months now, but I came to the conclusion that no one really knows what they are talking about. I have read opinions that range from "PS3 price cut tomorrow", to "PS3 price cut definetely at E3", to "PS3 price cut before the end of the summer", to "PS3 price cut before the holiday season". Unfortunatelly for me, and for many of you I asume, the price cut has not happened yet.

However, this new PS3 slim might be the answer to my (our) problem. Hopefully PS3 sales will continue to go down (last month's NPD report showed that Sony sold only about 127,000 PS3's in the States and preliminary figures show that May is going to be an equally bad month), and Sony will be forced to drop the price of the current PS3 in order to push units through the market in order to finally replace the old with the new PS3 slim (oh my goodness!!!! i just caught myself sounding like an "analyst").

Wishtful thinking....
