If you were a big fan of teen slasher films back in the '90s and you had the hots for Jennifer Love Hewitt, then you're going to get excited at the news that Sony is rebooting the franchise after all these years.

Variety is claiming that the studio has already assigned director Mike Flanagan (“Oculus”) to the project and that work is well under way on a new movie. The first film in the franchise came out in 1997 and it was based on the 1973 novel with the same title written by Lois Duncan.

Jennifer Love Hewitt had the title role, co-starring alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. The story was simple: four friends kill a man in a car accident, then get stalked by a serial killed after they try to cover it up.

Along with the Scream franchise, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was one of the biggest teen slasher films of the decade, which quickly went on to gain cult status. This explains why Sony wants to bring back the story into focus.

Mike Flanagan later tweeted that he was aboard the project, but denied that he was taking up the director's chair, or even producing the movie. Instead, he claimed that his part resumed to writing the script for the rebooted “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie.
