Sony seems to be on a roll, as its release of a DVD writer was just one of the actions it took over the past couple of days, the outfit having also built what it calls its latest HiFi system.

Multimedia devices really have become very versatile compared to a decade ago when most things were specialized on one or two functions, especially portable electronics.

Now, however, finding both audio and video support, and maybe network access, built into the same item is rather common.

Sony's newest product in some ways goes even beyond what is common, though it focuses on just audio support, being a steramlined HiFi system dubbed CMT-CX5.

It is, at the core, an audio system that supports USB drives, CDs and, though it is made to relay sound, can receive sound input as well.

The output power is of 40W, while Dynamic Sound Generator X-tra allows more dynamic sound to be generated.

Another asset is the fact that iPods and iPhones can be effortlessly linked to it via the iDevice dock (this really is the core capability in fact).

Sony went ahead and threw in FM and DAB/DAB+ radio tuners, plus RDS (PS mode) support, allowing the station name to be shown on the radio display.

"Great audio quality is now not enough for customers looking into new HiFi systems, they are also looking for products that will work well with the style of their homes,” said Matt Coupe, Audio Category Marketing Manager, Sony UK commented.

“The CMT-CX5 series represent a creative approach to product design combined that with an intuitive user interface so that customers can get to whatever music they want in the quickest possible time. Feedback from consumer testing groups has been very positive and we look forward to seeing the wider market reaction."

The wall-mountable HiFi system is colored black or white and can be mounted on a wall. August is when availability will ramp up, though prices haven't been mentioned.
