Fergal Gara, the managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment in the United Kingdom, believes that the PlayStation 4 needs to launch a number of new titles and experiences in order to break into the family space that’s still dominated by the 3DS handheld from Nintendo.

He is quoted by TrustedReviews as saying that, “The DS family was the bestselling format last year. Despite the stellar sales of the PS4 for the last four or five weeks, was still the best selling console or console family.”

It’s interesting to note that Sony is not comparing the PlayStation Vita to the 3DS, which might mean that its handheld is no longer the focus of its efforts.

The PlayStation 4 has managed to move 4.2 million units to customers before the end of 2014.

The Vita is currently being promoted as a completion device for the home console, but a limited number of developers is using it as such.
