Video game hardware maker and game publisher Sony announces that more than 2 million of those who have bought a PlayStation 4 home console have also signed up to the PlayStation Plus service, which requires a monthly subscription.

During an investor call, Kaz Hirai, the leader of the company, is quoted by CVG as saying that, “of all the 4.2 million PS4s that have moved into the hands of consumers, more than half of those people have signed up for the PS Plus service.”

Masaru Kato, the chief executive officer working on the PS Plus service, is not yet willing to offer a clear number for paying customers.

Sony says that the PlayStation 4 is selling above its initial expectations and that it is having some trouble making sure that enough consoles are available in stores.

PlayStation Plus is required for all those who are interested in playing online multiplayer matches, but it also offers free new games every month and discounts for digital content.

Masaru Kato also says that more than 150 million PlayStation Network accounts have been created so far, but has also failed to offer a clear number for the amount that is still active at the moment.

Initially, Sony claimed that it would never introduce a subscription service for the PSN because it wanted gamers to have free access to online features.

It changed its position when the PlayStation 4 was announced and launched because the expenses associated with the infrastructure were higher than they were for the previous generation of devices.

Sony says that it will continue to add new features to PlayStation Plus in order to make sure that subscribers are kept interested in the long term.

The PlayStation Now service might be used for free by subscribers in North America when it is launched in summer.
