Sony has recently pulled out of the digital reading market in the US

Sony might have renounced its eBook business in the US, but that doesn't mean the company is giving it all up.

In Japan, Sony has launched a huge 13.3-inch eReader, baptized the DPT-S1. This massive digital e-paper device is not meant for the average consumer and can be purchased exclusively via Sony’s business unit. The gadget is included in trial at the three distinct universities, so it's mostly targeted at institutions.

Paradoxically, GoodReader reports Sony is planning to bring the eReader to the US within the next three months with a huge price tag between $1,100 / €803 and $1,200 / €876, putting it far out of reach from ordinary folks.

Apart from the whopping price-tag, another caveat regarding the 13.3-incher is its inability to read anything but PFD files.

However, Sony believes the device will prove perfect for universities whose students are engaged in technical studies, such as mathematics, architecture and related. Will universities be willing to deplete their budgets to acquire 13.3-inch PDF readers? I’m inclined to believe they won't.
