SCEA's Jack Tretton feels that the console war will be no different if the GTA series moves to the 360

Over the years, Sony's PS2 has enjoyed a good dose of popularity and still does. Sometimes, the reason behind a console's success is one good game that has a sequel or two. Now, everyone knows this is the case with the 360's Halo series, which practically sells Microsoft's machine and will do so even better when Halo 3 launches in autumn.

Losing the GTA series that has done pretty well for Sony's PS2 could mean a disaster, yet Tretton simply won't admit it: "There's no question that having the Grand Theft Auto franchise helped us a lot and helped us sell some units, but I don't think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto ... I don't think losing GTA exclusivity hurts us. ... I really don't."

That "I really don't" at the end of the interview with TheStreet.com kinda' gives away some hesitation in Tretton's words, doesn't it? I don't know why Sony just can't admit defeat. And it's not even defeat they have to admit, but rather some problems that every big company has to face every once in a while. Microsoft is already popping the Champaign open over the GTA for the 360 deal but Sony is saying "naa, no biggy," when it is in fact pretty biggy!

Anyway, time will tell who's right and who's wrong but until then, keep your fingers crossed for the upcoming GTA IV Trailer. The countdown timer now shows 23 days and some pocket change, though that's like 23 million years for GTA fans.
