It looks like
Sony has finally understood that creating a wider userbase for its machines is the answer to all their problems. Of course, they haven't achieved much yet, as they've only just announced plans to release a limited edition Ceramic White
PlayStation 2 console, bundled with SingStar Pop, the second installment of the
SingStar franchise. It has also been confirmed that two high-quality USB microphones will also be included in the
bundle.
According to Sony's official word, "The new limited edition Ceramic White PlayStation 2 features the same ultra-sleek design and functions of the current Charcoal Black and Satin Silver PlayStation 2 versions as well as the DVD and CD playback capabilities, digital surround sound, two memory card slots and an integrated Ethernet port for network gaming." So basically, you'll be getting a differently colored PS2 along with a free game, but a great one at that.
Why is SingStar Pop so great you ask? Well, they say it will bring together friends and family to sing real songs from current chart-topping stars and pop legends including Alicia Keys, U2, Rihanna, Ashlee Simpson, The All-American Rejects and The Clash. With their microphones in hand, the living room makes the perfect concert stage, as players will find themselves singing duets and performing one-on-one battles, or even singing together with up to seven more friends in "Pass-the-Mic" game mode.
"With our expansive library of titles for PlayStation, led by social gaming experiences such as SingStar, and Buzz!, we have an incredible offering for first-time gaming families," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "At $149, the limited edition Ceramic White PlayStation 2, bundled with the family-friendly social gaming title, SingStar Pop, is an unbeatable value that will provide fun for everyone this holiday."
Given that the PS2 still outsells the company's newer machine, the PS3, it's a great opportunity for Sony to patch some of their wounds, but also give the world exactly what it wants - entertainment!
