Depending on which TV critic you ask, Kurt Sutter did either a brilliant thing or a not-so-brilliant one with his latest TV show, FX’s popular “Sons of Anarchy,” which wrapped its 7-season run this month. However, if you ask any fan, “SOA” was a superb show and all the characters that populated it will be sorely missed.

They are already – and this is precisely on what satire website Empire News counted on when it wrote up a fake news story saying that Sutter had confirmed plans for a “SOA” movie and that Brad Pitt was already on board, playing Charlie Hunnam’s father.

“Sons of Anarchy” movie is a prequel

To give more credence to the faux news, Empire News also included a few quotes from Sutter, which had obviously been made up for this purpose: apparently, production on the film would start in 2015, with a 2016 release date in mind.

The film would be a prequel that would tell the story of John Teller, Jax Teller’s dad and the first Son to ever try to get SAMCRO out of the gun business and onto a more legit path. The story would continue up until where “SOA” started, thus filling in the gaps for fans of the series, especially for those who were left wondering how SAMCRO was like back in John Teller’s time.

Charlie Hunnam would reprise his role as Jax, though he would only appear in the second half of the movie, unless flashes forward were also included. Katey Sagal would return as Gemma, the report claimed.

Perhaps the best part from this was that Sutter boasted of having convinced none other than Brad Pitt to star in the movie as John Teller.  “I am most excited about bringing Brad (Pitt) on as John Teller, he is absolutely perfect for the role,” Sutter was quoted as saying.

“People absolutely loved the show, as did I, and I have put a lot of thought into the matter, and we are going forward with turning it into a feature film,” he added.

Such a mean joke

Of course, none of that is true. Empire News claims to be a satire website, which means it can sometimes create stories out of nothing – to the detriment of fans who don’t bother to read the disclaimer.

This time was no exception, because thousands of loyal “SOA” fans, who refuse to believe that this is really the end for their favorite show, took the story for granted and even started engaging in debates on whether Pitt was really a good choice for the John Teller role, physical similarities to Charlie Hunnam aside.

But most importantly, they got excited at the prospect of seeing their favorite characters again and of having access to the universe they populate again. The fact that Sutter once joked that he had material for a couple of spinoff movies, if the opportunity ever presented itself, made the faux confirmation all the more convincing.

Sadly, it’s not happening – at least, not right now and definitely not with Brad Pitt. At least Sutter sees the funny side in this, tweeting that he has an even better idea for the film than getting Pitt on board as JT. You will find his tweet below; the second tweet is a reminder to fans that “SOA” is over, for the time being.
