A couple of days ago, Cher took part in a Facebook Q&A to promote her upcoming tour and her Dancing With the Stars guest-judge gig, and, while taking questions from fans, she made what she considered a funny joke about her famous ex Sonny Bono.

It’s now prompted a very heated debate online about whether she was in the right to say such a thing, or if she should just let sleeping dogs lie, especially considering that Sonny has been dead for so many years and they hadn’t been together since their 1975 divorce.

One fan asked her, “Hi Cher, if Sonny Bono were still alive today, but you only had a minute to talk to him, what would you say,” to which Cher replied, “How hot is it where you just came from?”

Clearly, Cher didn’t even attempt to hide her belief that Sonny was burning in Hell before he hypothetically came back to spend a minute with her. Some of his fans found the joke offensive, even though Cher has often spoken about the hell he put her through when they were still married.

Cher and Sonny became the biggest musical sensation in America in the ‘70s, releasing the hit “I Got You Babe” (embedded below) and starring in their television shows. When Cher decided to divorce him, she actually decided to become America’s most hated woman, as he had threatened her would happen.

To boot, she was left financially destitute and covered in debt. For a couple of years after the divorce, Cher worked in Vegas 2 shows a night to be able to pay off her debts and finally make a name for herself as a solo artist again.

In more recent interviews, the singer went into the details of the divorce, revealing that it had left her so devastated that she literally considering jumping off a balcony to stop being in so much pain.

Admittedly, Sonny cheated on her throughout the marriage more times than she could (or cared) to count. “I was trusting and faithful with him. I'm not sure we should've ever been husband and wife,” she said at one point.

Considering how heartbroken she was and how horribly she thinks Sonny wronged her, it’s no wonder she assumes he’s in Hell, is there?
