Sega has officially revealed Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a new kart racing game that acts as a sequel for 2010’s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing title.

Quite a lot of kart racing games have appeared in recent times, from Nintendo’s Mario Kart 7, to Sony’s ModNation Racers or its upcoming LittleBigPlanet Karting.

After the pretty successful Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, the Japanese company has now revealed a brand-new sequel, called Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

As you can tell by its new subtitle, the karts are now able to transform into other contraptions, including planes or boats, allowing them to traverse all kinds of environments.

“Following on from the huge success of Sonic & Sega All-Star’s Racing, the characters now have their own unique transforming vehicles designed to take advantage of the varying terrain,” Sega said.

“The line up on the Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed grid sees SEGA favorites – including Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr Eggman and AiAi – return to battle against newcomers that include Gilius Thunderhead of Golden Axe and Vyse of Skies of Arcadia.”

Environments will also be much more varied this time around, as the transforming karts allow players to traverse different kinds of maps, including a Temple Trouble track from Super Monkey Ball, a Dragon Canyon circuit inspired from Panzer Dragoon, and much more.

“Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed also sees the popular All-Star moves return with a brand new mechanic allowing your All-Star bar to power up faster if you race daringly and stylishly,” Sega added. “An all-new fair weapon system ensures that weapons fired at your vehicle can either be blocked or evaded once you have gained the skills to do so, making each race a unique and exhilarating experience whether it’s on water, in the air or on land.”

“Old rivalries can be settled and new track records set in the enhanced online multiplayer mode, whilst the Grand Prix mode and competitive Battle Arenas will prove that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is certainly set to change the rules of the race.”

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed will be released in late 2012 on platforms like the PC, PS3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, and Nintendo 3DS.
