In an attempt to help people living in the developing world, Dr Chris Sansom of the Cranfield University and specialists working with the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology in Islamabad have rolled out a solar-powered cooker.

As they explain, the cooker is designed in such a way that it does more than simply use solar power in order to heat food. Thus, it doubles as an electricity generator and can even store heat. Business Green explains that, because of this, it can successfully be used to tackle other requirements such as charging mobile phones or keeping air conditioning units up and running.

Presently, 1.6 billion people worldwide are forced to carry on with their daily routine without access to mains electricity.

While some resort to rather dangerous means of obtaining it (i.e. diesel- or kerosene-fueled generators), other have no choice but settle to not using any electricity at all.
