As it turns out, the UK really meant business when it said that it would try and considerably improve on its ecological footprint in the years to come.

Thus, news from this part of the world tells us that the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has been granted permission to fit as many as 175 ambulances with solar panels.

As detailed by Click Green, the panels are to be installed on top of the vehicles, and will serve to power the life-saving equipment carried by these four-wheelers.

Thanks to these eco-friendly power-generating systems, the ambulances will no longer have to rely on diesel engines to keep their batteries charged. Consequently, they will produce less pollution.

The same source tells us that, to secure the success of this project, the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has been awarded a £166,000 (approximately €207,380 / $268,340) funding boost.

The money was awarded as part of the Clean Vehicle Technology Fund made available by high officials in the UK, and is expected to help the Trust install solar panels on its ambulances sooner rather than later.

In case anyone was wondering, the Clean Vehicle Technology Fund has an overall value of £5 million (roughly €6.2 million / $8 million). This money is expected to help the UK green up about 1,163 vehicles.
