14 DAY TRIAL // Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s sister, is always a sight for sore eyes on any red carpet, or even on more “casual” appearances, and that’s mostly because she’s not afraid to take fashion risks. The one she took at the MET Gala 2015 last night didn’t seem to pay off.
As you can see in the gallery below, Solange wore a very odd circle dress that wasn’t even in keeping with the night’s theme. It completely overwhelmed her and came across as overkill.
Solange and the strange Giles dress
The theme of this year’s Costume Institute Gala Benefit was “China: Through the Looking Glass,” and celebrated the opening of the exhibition with the same name.
The event was co-chaired by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, who is also the organizer, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, and Chinese actress Gong Li. Celebrities were banned from taking selfies, and could opt out of sticking to the theme, as per details leaked online some hours before the Gala.
Solange probably chose to do her own style, without a nod to Chinese tradition. The Giles dress, which she accessorized with gorgeous Cartier jewelry and Christian Louboutin shoes, featured a futuristic pattern and ruffles in the back, while the upper part in the front was rigid, creating the impression of a circle.
It’s not that Solange looked actively bad, because she never does. It’s just that the dress seemed to have a life of its own, completely overwhelming her: she didn’t wear the dress, the dress wore her. That much is also obvious from the awkward way in which she posed on the red carpet, but then again, there were only so many ways in which she could try to show a circle of a dress off, right?
One year later
Solange’s appearance on the red carpet is making headlines for other reasons as well, besides the shape of her dress. It marked one year since she put a beatdown on brother-in-law Jay Z in an elevator, while Beyonce looked on, as leaked footage from a surveillance camera would later reveal.
Beyonce and Jay Z were also at the event, acting on the red carpet as if nothing of the sort had ever happened. In fact, Beyonce pretty much owned the red carpet, by arriving late and wearing what amounted to bejeweled netting in lieu of a dress, thus showing off her insane figure.
They didn’t pose for pictures with Solange, but they didn’t last year either. It is believed that the three have kissed and made up, putting the scandal behind them for good.
The only thing that stood to suffer during this time was Solange’s usually flawless style, it would seem.
