She said in the past she was not the type of artist to make music for mainstream audiences and, judging by her actions over the weekend, Solange Knowles means business when she says so. The singer, also known as Beyonce’s younger sister, has announced that she’s leaving her record label, Interscope, to go down the independent route, RapUp informs.

Solange released an album with Interscope last year but, given the way work on her forthcoming material is progressing, she’s now decided to go into a different direction, away from mainstream sound and promotion. Of course, according to a post on her Twitter page, she will always be grateful to the people at the record label who’ve helped her so far and have been so supportive of everything she wanted to do until now.

“Although it’s been a wonderful journey & experience at Interscope Records, after truly recognizing what’s important to ME as an artist, I decided it was time for me to continue my path on a more independent platform. I thank Ron [Fair] and Jimmy [Iovine] for believing in me as an artist and supporting my journey… and have nothing but respect for the Interscope family. I’m excited about continuing to dive in, experiment and creating music and art with no boundaries, fears or expectations. Gonna be fun folks.” Solange tweeted, as cited by RapUp.

In other words, Solange has left Interscope, one of the biggest music labels in the world, to get her artistic freedom. Always the one to speak her mind especially as far as her music was concerned, it wasn’t long ago that the young singer addressed the issue of her art in a magazine interview, saying she would rather go against the current if that meant she could have a handful of smart, well-educated fans that would know how to properly appreciate what she did.

“It was never my intention to have this huge commercial success because otherwise, I would have made other kinds of records. I know how to write pop [and radio] records. I’ve written them for other people. But that isn’t the music that inspires me. It isn’t the music that I feel good about performing or that makes me want to get up and push every morning and be in 10,000 cities in one month promoting. I think people are the ones to put expectations on you. I never really put expectations on myself. I know that it’s a business and the record label has to make a profit from it. I understand that side of things, but at the end of the day it was always my goal to do exactly what I was able to do. That makes me feel really good.” Solange was saying a while back, as we also informed you at the time.
