Why on Earth Apple didn't include this update with the new MacBooks is still a mystery, but for those who've already gotten their mitts on one of the new laptops, Software Update 1.2 is “highly recommended,” the company says.

Apple's Support page reveals that the update specifically targets the new MacBooks boasting a “unibody enclosure.” Apparently, the notebooks still needed more "guidance" as to how they should treat external displays. From Apple's Support page:

About MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.2

This update contains software bug fixes for precision aluminum unibody enclosure MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook computers introduced in October 2008.

The update improves compatibility with external displays and includes a variety of software fixes. This update is recommended for all users of these systems.

Weighing in at 45MB, the download supports Dansk, Deutsch. English, Español, Finnish, Français, Italiano, Japanese, Korean, Nederlands, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Svensk and Traditional Chinese.

Whether or not the update addresses compatibility with the newly-introduced Apple Cinema Display is not specified. However, Apple did mention yesterday, at the Town Hall event that its new Display targets notebooks, calling it “the first display made precisely for a notebook.”

The company itself says that the 24-inch LED Cinema Display doesn’t just expand the screen of the new MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, but the “whole experience,” as it features a built-in iSight camera, mic, and speakers. “Designed for the new MacBook family, the LED Cinema Display includes an integrated MagSafe charger, three USB 2.0 ports and the new Mini DisplayPort, making it easy for MacBook users to quickly connect and power their notebooks as well as use their favorite peripherals,” Apple says. Therefore, the update most likely addresses compatibility with these features.

Next-gen MacBook, MacBook Pro users can update either by using the Software Update mechanism in Mac OS X, or by downloading the standalone package installer here.
