The following Linux-based operating systems were announced last week: SystemRescueCd 1.3.5, PC/OS 10 and Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS. In other news: the KDE community announced the third release candidate for the upcoming KDE Software Compilation 4.4 suite; AMD released the ATI Catalyst 10.1 video drivers for Linux users, now with support for Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). Summary:

dots SystemRescueCdOn January 25th, François Dupoux released SystemRescueCd 1.3.5, which is now powered by Linux kernel 2.6.31.12, with an updated Btrfs filesystem from Linux kernel 2.6.32. The popular GParted application for partitioning tasks was updated, as well as the FSArchiver and NTFS-3G.

Highlights of SystemRescueCd 1.3.5:

· Updated the standard Linux kernel packages to version 2.6.31.12 (with an updated Btrfs filesystem, from Linux kernel 2.6.32); · Updated FSArchiver to version 0.6.5 (brings the "--exclude" option, progress information and various fixes); · Updated GParted to version 0.5.1 (includes a workaround for issues with resizing partitions); · Updated lvm2 (Logical Volume Manager v2) to version 2.02.56; · mtools were downgraded to version 3.9.11, in order to fix some issues; · NTFS-3G was updated to version 2010.01.16 (brings various fixes); · The "dhcphostname=myhostname" boot option was implemented. It is used by the DHCP client; · The missing codepages, such as CP850, were added because they are required by syslinux and mtools.

dots PC/OSOn January 26th, Roberto Dohnert proudly announced the immediate availability for download of the PC/OS 10 Ubuntu-based operating system. Not only that the new PC/OS has drastically changed its version number, from 2009.x to 10, but it is also distributed in two editions: OpenWorkstation and WebStation! PC/OS 10 is now based on the popular Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) operating system and it's powered by Linux kernel 2.6.28. The speedy Google Chrome web browser and the versatile Skype VoIP client are also part of this brand-new release of the PC/OS operating system!

Highlights of PC/OS 10:

· Based on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope); · Linux kernel 2.6.28; · Added the Skype VoIP client (available on both OpenWorkstation and WebStation editions); · Added Google Chrome web browser (the default web browser for the WebStation edition); · Updated the OpenOffice.org open source office suite; · Added recovery and support utilities for the BFS (Be File System) filesystem; · Atunes is now the default audio player on the OpenWorkstation edition; · Applied all the existing security updates and patches; · Fixed lots of reported bugs from previous releases!

dots UbuntuOn January 29th, Steve Langasek announced the fourth maintenance release of the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) operating system, which (in case you forgot) is supported with maintenance updates and security fixes until April 2011 on desktops, and April 2013 on servers. The new Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS maintenance release brings to its dedicated users a lot of security updates and corrections (over 70), all with a single goal: to keep Ubuntu 8.04 LTS a stable and reliable Linux distribution!

Highlights of Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS:

· ISO's contents can now be used on a USB device; · GRUB can now be installed on JFS partitions; · Added desktop support for SMB/CIFS shares; · Fixed a crash in the Mozilla Firefox web browser; · Added support for the new Yahoo! Messenger protocol in Pidgin; · In order to eliminate the use of static sentinel, a patch for stack guard randomization, from Intrepid glibc, was added; · Updated the "daylight savings time" rules for Fiji, Argentina and Bangladesh; · Fixed an issue with the vblade init script in the server edition; · Fixed an issue with the freeradius' "reload" action.

· On January 25th, the KDE developers announced the second Release Candidate, and the last development release of the upcoming and highly anticipated KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC) 4.4. This development release, dubbed CampKDE, is here as a testing base for all of you who want to report bugs. ATI Catalyst 10.1 updates the software to version 8.69 and it introduces production support for the Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) operating system from Canonical.
